German painter Peter Zimmermann sources images from the media and scans them into his computer, examining each image in relation to the structure and perception of pictures in a monitor-fixed present. He then distorts these images to abstraction, rendering the actual source material effectively unintelligible. Applying as many as 20 layers of epoxy resin, Zimmermann creates paintings and site-specific installations that explore the concepts of form and space with overlapping, often psychedelic shapes whose glossy surfaces mirror the viewer.
Zimmermann lives and works in Colonge, Germany. His work has been shown extensively in museums and galleries throughout Europe, Asia and the United States and may be found in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris; Neue Galerie, Autriche; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
